HARP1 Course Description

This certification course provides students the opportunity to complete the educational requirements set out in the HARP Act to allow for the successful application of radiation in dentistry. Students will gain in-depth understanding of the theory and application of radiation in dentistry. 

Topics to be covered address:

  • Properties of radiation
  • Interactions of radiation
  • Biological effects of radiation
  • Background radiation
  • Measurement of radiation
  • Production and characteristics of x-rays
  • Relationship between technical factors that affect image quality and dose
  • Radiation protection legislation, control of radiation hazards, and quality control. 

Pre-requisites: Minimum 1 Year Chairside Experience OR Internationally Trained Dentist with Relevant Proof of Licensing (W.E.S, IQAS or Equivalent Confirmation Required)

Practical Location: Guelph, ON

Theory Start Date: Immediately! As Soon As You Register.

What if I miss an exam?

If you miss an exam, you can reschedule it

Where do exams take place?

There are 2 exams for the course. There is a theory exam, and a practical exam.

The practical exam will take place during your 2 day practical session in Guelph. Be prepared for both!

One can only take the practical session after completing the theory exams

How does the theory exam work?

The theory exams will take place online in a remote proctoring environment

There will be 150 Multiple-choice questions and you need to get a passing mark of at least 75%

The theory exam is NOT an open book exam

How much does it cost?

The course is $1995 per student, plus tax. This includes all lessons, tests, exams and access to your instructor via the discussion board. There will be an additional cost for the textbook being used. You will receive instructions on how to purchase the textbook after registering for the course.

How long does the course take to complete?

The theory portion of the course is self-paced, and totals 62.5 hours of learning time including lectures, assignments, quizzes, tests, and a 3-hour exam.

Upon completion of your first exam, you will then proceed to complete a 2-day (one weekend) practical portion.

Depending on how quickly and thoroughly you can complete the theory and schedule your practical, we estimate 3 weeks at the earliest. It’s up to you how quickly you would like to complete the course.

Are you an accredited college?

DDSMasters and its HARP1 Dental Radiography HARP Approved course are not registered under the Ontario Private Career Colleges Act, 2005 as it is a non-vocational course. However, we do have ministry approval to offer a HARP approved course.

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

The DDSMasters HARP1 Dental Radiography HARP Approved Course is offered to those individuals serious about being able to administer X-Rays in a dental setting. Individuals are asked to carefully consider registering for the course before making the commitment. It is a high quality course that allows you to receive your certification in the least amount of time and with the most flexibility. However, we do expect full commitment after registering.

For this reason, there are no refunds if you decide to cancel or leave the course part way through.

How do I book my practical sessions?

Please see the following steps to ensure you know how to secure your practical session:

  1. Submit application form
    1. In the application form, you will select your top 2 practical weekend options
  2. Once you are approved for the course, you will complete registration and pay the fees
  3. Upon completing the registration, you will receive a series of emails that will help orient you to the course, and will also provide you with a confirmation of the practical weekend you have been assigned

 

IMPORTANT: You MUST complete the theory portion of the course and the theory exam before your scheduled practical weekend. Also note that by missing your assigned practical session, you risk having to wait until the next available practical dates. There is no charge to reschedule your practical dates.

Yes. You will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course. You will be able to administer X-rays in your dental office right away.
